Questions about what to do on the island? Our guides below go deeper on every topic.
Section 1 of 5
Before You Go
-
Book accommodations 60–90 days out for peak season (June–August) Sea Pines and Shipyard fill up fast — villas and cottages go before hotels.
-
Book accommodations 2–4 weeks out for shoulder season (April–May, September–October) Better rates, lighter crowds, and the water is still warm through October.
-
Reserve golf tee times at least 2 weeks in advance Harbour Town and Palmetto Dunes book out quickly during spring and fall.
-
Make dinner reservations for popular restaurants Hudson's Seafood House, The Jazz Corner, and Skull Creek Boathouse all book out — don't walk in expecting a table on a Friday night.
-
Pack reef-safe sunscreen Required on many beaches. The tidal marsh ecosystem is sensitive — the locals notice.
-
Bring lightweight layers for evening outdoor dining Coastal breezes drop 10–15°F at night, especially March–May and September–November.
-
Download the Hilton Head Island map app or save offline maps Plantation entrances, beach paths, and bike trails don't always show up on Google Maps.
-
Pack insect repellent No-see-ums are real. They peak at dusk near the marsh — you'll want DEET if you're outdoors in the evening.

Getting There
Planning a driving route? Our vacation packages guide covers fly-vs-drive tradeoffs and the best ways to bundle travel.
-
Fly into Savannah/Hilton Head International (SAV) for most routes 45 minutes from the island. More flight options and better prices than the small Hilton Head Airport (HHH).
-
Consider Hilton Head Island Airport (HHH) if connecting through Charlotte or Atlanta American and United serve HHH directly — great if you're already routing through CLT or ATL.
-
Rent a car if you're not staying in a plantation with bike access Public transit is minimal. Without a car or bike, you're dependent on rideshare — and Uber availability is limited late at night.
-
Book bike rentals in advance if your accommodation doesn't include them The 60+ miles of bike paths make cycling the best way to explore. Most plantation resorts offer rentals — book them when you book the room.
-
Look into the Vagabond Cruise ferry if coming from Savannah A scenic water route — slow and fun, not the fastest option, but worth it for the arrival experience.
-
Note that the US-278 causeway is the only road onto the island — plan for traffic Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings in summer can mean 45+ minute delays on the bridge. Adjust arrival/departure times accordingly.

Where to Stay
-
Sea Pines Resort — Best for golf, Harbour Town, and the lighthouse The island's most storied resort. Pricey but iconic. Day passes available if you're staying elsewhere.
-
Palmetto Dunes — Best for families and water sports 3 miles of ocean beach, lagoon system for kayaking, and calm water. Great for kids.
-
Port Royal / Shipyard — Quieter, fewer crowds, more value Golf-heavy plantations with beach access. Lower prices than Sea Pines without sacrificing quality.
-
North Forest Beach / Coligny area — Best for walkability and nightlife Walk to Coligny Beach Park, restaurants, and shops. More of a beach town vibe than the gated plantations.
-
Palmetto Bluff (Bluffton) — Best for a true luxury escape 15 minutes from the island. A private resort town with Auberge hospitality, riverfront, and romantic atmosphere. Higher price point, fully worth it for a splurge trip.
-
Confirm what's included with your rental or resort Some plantation properties charge extra for beach chairs, parking, bike rentals, and pool access. Read the fine print before you assume it's all-in.

Things to Do
See our full breakdown: Everything to Do on Hilton Head Island — beaches, kayaking, dolphin tours, golf, and dining in one guide.
-
Pick your beach early and stake a spot by 9am in summer Coligny Beach Park is the most accessible. Alder Lane (Sea Pines) and Driessen Beach are quieter alternatives.
-
Book a dolphin watching or eco-cruise Hilton Head has one of the highest dolphin densities on the East Coast. These tours book out in summer — reserve online ahead of time.
-
Rent kayaks or paddleboards for the Calibogue Sound or Broad Creek Flatwater kayaking through the marsh is genuinely one of the best things to do on the island. Go at high tide for the easiest paddle.
-
Play one round of golf at a course you've never played before Harbour Town Golf Links (most scenic), Palmetto Dunes (Robert Trent Jones course, great value), and Arthur Hills at Palmetto Hall are the top picks. See our golf guide.
-
Bike the Palmetto Dunes bike path or the Cross Island connector trail The 60+ mile network is flat and well-maintained. Rent bikes at your resort or from Island Bikes near Coligny.
-
Visit Harbour Town for the lighthouse and waterfront dining at sunset Climb the lighthouse ($5) for the island's best view. The waterfront restaurants fill up — arrive by 5:30pm or make a reservation.
-
Try the shrimp at Hudson's Seafood House on the Docks South Carolina shrimp, caught locally, eaten on a working dock. One of the island's best experiences for the price. Cash is appreciated.
-
Consider a dinner cruise for a special evening The Vagabond sunset dinner cruise is one of the more romantic things to do on the island — great for a couples trip. See our romantic getaway guide.
